  Satellite

1. An object that revolves around another object of greater mass (such as the earth) and has a motion that is determined by the force of attraction (gravity) of the larger object. 2. A space vehicle that orbits the earth which contains one or more radio transponders that receive and retransmit signals to and from the earth. 3. A piece of equipment or system that operates at a remote location from a central control system.

This diagram shows the different types of satellite communication systems. The GEO satellite system is primarily used for television broadcast services, as their satellites appear stationary above the Earth. MEO and LEO systems are used for mobile communications as they are located much closer to the Earth. However, these satellites continuously move relative to the surface of the Earth.
